In Kenya’s early dawn, Njogu, a nurse and wound care specialist, sets out on his days off to provide care in rural areas. His mission: to offer medical help to those who can’t afford to seek treatment, focusing on wound care.
Starting his day by 4 or 5 AM, Njogu aims to visit 6 to 10 patients. He brings crucial medical services to communities with limited access to healthcare facilities, teaching patients how to manage their wounds to prevent complications. Njogu strives to visit every 3-4 days to ensure optimal wound healing.
Each of Njogu’s patient visits is meticulous and caring. He begins by carefully removing the old dressing, then cleans the wound with great care before applying a new, fresh dressing. These moments are also educational opportunities; Njogu takes the time to teach his patients about proper wound care. He provides guidance on dietary recommendations and lifestyle changes that can aid in the healing process, emphasizing the importance of elevation to optimize wound healing. This comprehensive approach ensures that patients not only receive the immediate care they need but also the knowledge to support their own health.
Njogu often faces these challenges head-on, sometimes with the help of a healthcare colleague for assistance if one is available. This extra pair of hands can greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of his visits. However, if no one is available to accompany him, Njogu makes the journey alone, unwavering in his commitment to his patients. His resilience and dedication shine through, regardless of whether he has assistance.
Often, his work is met with obstacles such as unreliable communication and lack of clean water. Despite these challenges, Njogu’s determination is unwavering. On one occasion, when his car broke down, Njogu ensured his patients’ care didn’t stop. He sent them money for transportation to his workplace, the Kangema Sub County Hospital, highlighting his extraordinary commitment to healthcare accessibility.
